Best Pool Deck Stone for Texas Heat

Around a Texas pool, the right deck material is the difference between a comfortable summer and running across scorching stone.

What matters in a pool deck

Travertine

Light-colored travertine is a favorite around Texas pools because it stays comparatively cool and has a natural texture. Tumbled or brushed finishes grip better when wet. It should be sealed, and set on a proper base.

Limestone and flagstone

Texas limestone and flagstone suit Hill Country homes. Lighter colors stay cooler; darker stones heat up. Natural cleft surfaces grip well but vary in thickness, so a skilled setter matters.

Pavers

Concrete and porcelain pavers come in many colors and are easy to repair, since individual pieces can be lifted. Choose light colors and textured finishes for comfort and grip.

Build for clay soil

Central Texas clay swells and shrinks with moisture. A compacted base, drainage away from the pool and proper joints keep any deck from cracking and shifting.

Questions

Is travertine slippery around a pool?

Polished travertine can be. Tumbled, brushed or textured finishes are the standard choice for pool decks.

Can you put stone over an existing concrete deck?

Often, if the slab is sound and the heights work at doors and coping. A mason will check on site.
